UCC GMSA Women’s Wing Holds Forum

As part of activities marking the 2013 edition of the Islam Propagation Week (IPW), the women’s wing of the Ghana Muslim Students’ Association UCC Chapter has held a forum on Sunday at the Sasakawa Conference Room to discuss issues that affect the Muslim woman.

Madam Hawa Habib speaking on the topic ‘The status of women in Islam’ emphasized the rights and privileges the religion of Islam bestows upon the woman.She cited the right of a woman to inheritance, education, family and owning property as some of the rights Islam gives the woman.

Madam Hawa narrated how precious the Holy Qur’an holds the Muslim woman compared to the man.She gave an example of the saying of the Prophet Muhammed that a mother holds three quarters of the love and care of the children while the man holds only a quarter.She therefore entreated Muslim students to counter the misconception of veiling by Muslim women.

Brother Zain Abdul-Nasir,a Master student at the University of London encouraged Muslim women to further their eduaction even after they are married when he spoke on the topic ‘Is marriage an obstacle to female girl child education’.He then advised the ladies to seek good husbands who will support them when the time comes for them to further their education.

IPW is annual event organized by GMSA UCC to propagate the teachings of Islam among its members and the university communtiy.
